To celebrate and honor the lives of today's nursing home patients and the dedication of their caregivers, May 9-15 has been set aside in a special governor's proclamation as Nursing Home Week in Tennessee.

Nursing Home Week spotlights the lifetime achievements of patients and honors the hard work and dedication of caregivers who are proud to care for these honorable men and women. This year's theme, "Embracing Our Heritage," calls on patients, family members, caregivers and volunteers to reflect on the past and rediscover the special treasures that have been passed from generation to generation.

Beverly Healthcare [Springfield] will join other long-term care facilities in hosting special events designed to recognize the fundamental role nursing homes play in the continuum of long-term care.

"The services provided in nursing homes are an essential part of health care in America and growing more essential with the increasing elderly population," said Simon Yazbeck, administrator at Beverly Healthcare. "Our goal is to emphasize the abilities rather than the disabilities of each patient and provide comprehensive care that upholds the quality of life. When people visit Beverly they can see just how important quality long-term care is for the patients and families who need it."

Beverly Healthcare has scheduled a variety of special activities in celebration of Nursing Home Week, including Facility Open House, May 11. "Our patients have so much to share, and we feel that activities such as these are wonderful ways to include the entire community in our facility," said Simon Yazbeck. "If you would like to join in or just come for a visit or tour, we would love to include you."

More than 34,000 elderly and disabled patients receive the round-the-clock nursing care they need in Tennessee nursing homes. State-licensed nursing homes offer state-of-the-art rehabilitation and medical care administered by a staff that includes nurses, physicians, dietitians, therapists and other professional caregivers. Most facilities also offer physical, occupational and speech therapy and include special programs and even separate wings for Alzheimer's patients.

Nursing homes take a holistic and individual approach to each patient, with a care plan designed to include a wide array of activities, social events and entertainment opportunities. Every facility has a full-time coordinator who plans, supervises and implements daily activities and special events.

"We salute our community's citizens now residing in nursing homes, many of whom planted the seeds that made our state grow and prosper," said Governor Phil Bredesen in his proclamation. "I encourage all citizens to visit friends and loved ones who reside at these facilities and help to honor and serve the individuals who laid the foundations of the Volunteer State by participating in this year's observance of Nursing Home Week."

Nursing homes provide The Right Care at the Right Time for patients in need of 24-hour nursing care due to illness or disability. Beverly Healthcare is a member of THCA, a nonprofit organization whose members include long-term care facilities located throughout the state.
