More than 300 people laced up their walking shoes to raise more than $34,000 in the Third Annual Memory Walk on Sept. 18.

The total raised exceeded the $33,000 fund-raising goal. In 2003, the walk brought in $29,000.

Money raised will benefit Alzheimer's Association awareness and educational programs in Wayne, Union, Fayette, Randolph and Rush counties.

In addition to exceeding the financial goal, more teams participated in the event than ever before.

The one- or three-mile walk, which started at McBride Stadium in Richmond, started with Richmond Mayor Sally Hutton speaking and Richmond Roosters baseball team mascot Rowdy Rooster entertaining the crowd.

Before and after the walk, participants could honor a loved one by posting his or her name on a newly created Memory Wall.

The Friends Fellowship Community team, one of the walk's sponsors, led the walk. All sponsors where recognized.

The top team in the Memory Walk was the combined Beverly Healthcare team from Golden Rule and Oak Ridge Rehab, raising $4,332. The Friends Fellowship Community team was second, and the Rosegate Village team was third.

Mary Russell, who works at Adult Day Care of Richmond, was the event chairwoman.
