The last three blood drives that were held in Mobridge [S.D.] included a heated rivalry between Beverly Healthcare and the Mobridge Regional Hospital.
In February, Beverly Healthcare Marketing Director Sharon Martin issued a challenge to the health services community to find as many new donors as possible for the drives that are held in Mobridge at various times during the year.
Donors for the drives, sponsored by the Mobridge Hospital Auxiliary and manned by United Blood Services of Bismarck, have been loyal regulars, dedicated to saving lives in the area. With blood supplies dwindling nationwide, the Auxiliary was looking for an influx of “new blood” to ensure the supply in the area would not become critical.
The health services community stepped to the plate and began to rally their employees to get new donors to give other donors a hand.
Between Mobridge Regional Hospital and Beverly Healthcare, 62 donors came forward, with 13 being first-time donors.
The challenge, which lasted for three drives, was won by the hospital, whose employees just squeeked by the healthcare center by one new donor. The challenge will continue until the end of the year.
The winners will be awarded a plaque proclaiming their victory until such a time as the Healthcare Center overtakes them and is issued the winning proclamation.
