Alzheimer's Program
Some four million people across the nation live with Alzheimer’s disease—including almost half of the population over 85 years of age. Although many people in the early stages of Alzheimer’s can continue to live at home, safety becomes an issue at some point. The symptoms of confusion, paranoia, anxiety and depression will increase as the disease progresses. This puts families in the tough position of having to choose either the safety provided in a nursing home or the independence of living at home.

With that in mind, our Alzheimer’s program incorporates little touches of “home” into an environment of safety so the family doesn’t have to choose between safety and freedom—we provide both.

Our philosophical approach to Alzheimer’s care is to enhance our residents’ lives by:

• Honoring each person’s uniqueness and dignity

• Building on individual strengths

• Interpreting the language of behavior

• Understanding that “life is an activity of being and doing”

• Creating an environment that nurtures their feelings

• Eliminating the factors that cause disability

• Enabling freedom of movement and expression

• Providing continuity of care and services throughout all stages of the disease

• Entering into “partnerships” with family members and others who touch our residents’ lives

Also, as part of our commitment to provide continuity of care, our advanced Alzheimer’s care units focus on residents in the later stages of the disease.

Alzheimer’s Care

In addition to the Alzheimer’s care provided at all of our nursing homes, we have 89 Alzheimer’s Care homes across the United States, where programming is provided 24 hours a day, 7 days a week—delivered in small groups or individually—based on a social model of care.

Alzheimer’s Care is more than just an eldercare program. It is the result of extensive research and training on Alzheimer’s disease and how it affects both the patient and the patient’s family. Our work with the national Alzheimer’s Association, along with our experience as a leading provider of eldercare services, helps us to individualize the care of our residents who have the disease.

Alzheimer’s Care is specially designed with the needs of the individual in mind. The units provide the familiarity of home, including family-style dining and the freedom to garden or take a walk in a secure outdoor courtyard. They offer freedom and the opportunity to explore life as fully, independently and securely as possible. The overall environment—from the decor to the meals to the quiet atmosphere—is intended to help create a soothing, homelike setting and lifestyle.
